LOOKING
One word after another is the only way. A sentence then a paragraph. Ideas can actually come second. The words can drive it until the deeper mind takes over. There’s almost always something to say. Should i debate pancakes vs. waffles? What about talk about hobbies? Maybe an in depth discussion about how to attack a job interview? Maybe break down the brilliance of Duran Duran? There’s always something if I just put down the first couple of words.
Following up a couple of solid posts is always the most difficult. It’s like trying to write a third hit song in a row. Sometimes you end up with a b-side. That’s okay. It’s still a song and that’s cool.
It’s in there somewhere. A little beneath. A spark. A feeling. A wonder.
A friend commented on one of my posts with a letter written by Kurt Vonegut to a class in NY. In it he encourages, no, pleads with the class to participate in any art form every day, because by doing so we learn about ourselves. That’s what the first few words are for me. It’s a willful opening of the door to what makes me (you) tick.
It’s not a “figure it out once and for all” approach because we are ever (de)evolving. I won’t finish this and know why I think and feel the way I do about things but I’ll have at least looked. And looking helps us. Looking in can scare the shit out of you. Not looking is scarier.
There’s is no real “figuring it out” I don’t think. Just when we think we have, the world jars us and we are left holding our rudder. Two minutes prior and we were steering our boat towards calm and contentment and then a Louisiana storm popped up and snapped the mast. You adapt or face the consequences.
Today let’s be happy with the opportunity to recognize ourselves. To look in and maybe calm ourselves with a deep breath. To exhale and just be a little alive for a few.
If every at bat was a home run., the game would get just as boring as one full of strike outs. A single earned by beating the throw can hold just as much excitement.
This means open yourself and be looking for the little slices of life.
Yesterday I told you to live more. To waste less time. Today I’m telling you that every day can’t be the best day ever but that there’s always a chance to see something if you’re looking.
It starts with opening your eyes.
