Friends
When we started out. Everything was exciting, new, like that elementary school kind of exciting. That you found someone who gets you. Finally. Then you do everything together and your names become like Bennifer. Except I’m Jlo. But life changes and friendships, like marriages and anything else worth having, take work.
I had this thought at the end of a bike ride. That friendships have to evolve. Yes you still have 10 or 20 year old jokes that no one gets, but you’d better keep creating new ones or things fade.
We all have those friends that the relationships never change. We also have those that have seemingly disappeared. It’s not that you don’t care for those people any more (well maybe) but rather life moves in different directions for one or both of you and you end up not talking for 2 years.
I have had a lot of these in my life and mostly blame myself for what I used to think of as consuming people and then leaving a shell of the relationship. Selfish and unknowing, I didn’t realize then that it sometime takes work to be friends. This has been a pretty great realization.
What I’ve also realized is that just as I have moved on from people, people have moved on from me. In some cases it feels like my doing and in others it’s on them. Just how it goes.
So this won’t go on much further. The point I hope has been made.
If you have good friends, be thankful and remember that all good relationships take work. Sometimes you have to reinvent things.
